Digestion: What’s Causing Your Pain?

Chronic inflammation has been linked to many serious conditions like heart disease and arthritis. Find out how improving your digestion can quench the fires of inflammation and chronic diseases.

If you suffer from headaches, heartburn, gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, insomnia, achy joints,  arthritis, or lower back pain and indigestion, and have not found relief with traditional medical approaches, do not despair. There’s a natural approach that may help you with your problems.

This natural approach evaluates your body’s ability to digest your food and its ability to maintain normal healthy functions.  While popular health magazines and experts frequently advise us about what to eat, most expert sources often overlook one essential factor. That factor is your body’s ability to digest, process, and utilize what you eat.

Compromised digestion leads to illness for two scientific reasons. First, if your body cannot process the food you are taking in, that food can become a toxic stressor to your body’s organs and immune system.  When your body cannot cope with the stress of toxicity from compromised digestion, inflammation results.

When your body becomes inflamed, there are five common signs. Signs of inflammation are swelling, heat (or fever), redness, pain, and impaired function in many areas of the body including joints, muscles and/or organs. Headaches, heartburn, gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, insomnia, achy joints and arthritis are all symptoms that your body is inflamed.

The second reason compromised digestion leads to illness has to do with our body’s ability to process what we eat in our digestive tract. If you cannot digest your food properly, your body will not be able to get the nutrients that are in the food. As you probably already know, there are three primary food groups - carbohydrates, protein, and fats – which our bodies use to create and maintain health.  Failure to digest any of the three primary food groups can result in chronic health problems. The following table outlines some common symptoms that may result with compromised digestion.

Symptoms of Digestion Deficiency

When you cannot digest your food completely, inflammation and the symptoms in the chart result. Did you know that inflammation is your body’s natural response to protect itself and is a sign that your body has begun it’s own natural healing process?  Most medical approaches treat the symptoms of inflammation as if it’s a disease and ignore the underlying cause of your symptoms. Oftentimes, prescription anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to suppress inflammation. However, most anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen also interfere with your body’s own tissue healing enzymes, and slow the rate of your healing. Chronic use of anti-inflammatory drugs may also create serious side effects such as gastric bleeding, and raise your risk for heart attack.
