Here’s how compromised digestion aggravates and increases the symptoms of allergies:  Whenever we eat too much food, or foods that we cannot digest, the bowel lining becomes irritated and inflamed.  Common symptoms of this inflammatory process may include abdominal pain, bloating, swelling, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion and constipation at the same time,  and excessive mucous or blood in the stool.  Inflammation is actually a sign that the bowel is being damaged.

When the bowel becomes damaged, the bowel becomes leaky, and small fragments of undigested food begin to leak into our blood stream.  White blood cells, your immune system’s main line of defense, attack undigested food fragments as if they were a harmful bacteria or virus.

If the load of undigested food is too high, your body’s detoxification systems become overwhelmed.  Your liver begins to work over time, and your kidneys may not adequately filter toxins and immune complexes formed by undigested food.  Then your lungs and sinuses become avenues for releasing toxins.  Eventually your lungs and nose become filled with excess mucous as an attempt to eliminate the waste products that have built up in the bowel and blood stream.  Add in a good helping of pollen and molds to this already hypersensitive immune system and you’re ready for a full-blown allergy attack!

Fortunately there are things you can do to calm the storm inside so your allergies don’t have to be so severe this year.

The first step is to desensitize your immune system by reducing the burden of undigested food entering your blood stream.  You can do this by reducing foods that you are intolerant to, and by using digestive enzymes before meals to digest your food. You may have heard of lactose intolerance, which is the inability to digest lactose, a sugar in milk and dairy products. People with lactose intolerance do not make enough of the enzyme, lactase, which digests milk sugar. Lactose intolerance mimics the symptoms of a food allergy, and sufferers will often have, gas, bloating, and violent diarrhea soon after eating dairy products or foods that contain dairy products. 

Common foods that you may be intolerant to can include chocolate, sugar, dairy products, wheat and corn. Avoiding foods that you may be intolerant to, along with the other strategies such as using HEPA filters at home, can aid you in reducing the symptoms of allergies this spring.
