Artificial Sweeteners May Be Contributing to Weight Gain

If you use artificial sweeteners, you might want to consider getting that sweet taste more naturally. Recently a link has been made between the consumption of artificial sweeteners and an impaired glycemic response resulting in changes in gut bacteria.

Investigators in the journal Nature, (September 2014) evaluated 381 non-diabetic subjects for artificial sweetener intake, blood sugar metabolism and gut microbiota. Compared to the subjects that did not consume artificial sweeteners, researchers determined that the subjects who consumed the greatest amount of artificial sweeteners had higher fasting glucose levels, poorer glucose tolerance and altered gut microbiota. Once the body loses its ability to regulate glucose, weight gain is soon to follow. 

The researchers stated: “Collectively our results link non-caloric artificial sweeteners consumption dysbiosis and metabolic abnormalities, thereby calling for a reassessment of massive non-caloric artificial sweetener usage.”
