In this day of technologically advanced medicine, it’s easy to overlook a simple cause of many health problems – what you eat, and your ability to digest it. 

The three basic building blocks of food are carbohydrates, fats, and protein. Your body requires balanced ingestion, and adequate digestion of carbohydrates, protein and fat to create optimal health. Failure to maintain adequate intake or digestion of the three major food groups results in symptoms that are early warning signs of serious health problems to come.

What role do the three major food groups play in fueling our health?

Carbohydrates: The body uses carbohydrates for one thing – ENERGY. How often do you feel fatigued? Do you frequently feel that you need something sweet to boost your energy? Do you find it difficult to concentrate? Do you get frequent headaches? If so, you may be having problems with carbohydrate digestion.

Fats: Our body uses fats in many different ways. Our skin contains substances made from fats. Fats are used to make our sex hormones. Our body’s own pain-regulating pathways rely on fats to produce substances that regulate inflammation and pain. Is your skin dry? Do you have hormonal problems? Do you ache all the time? If you are having any of these problems you may be having difficulty digesting and utilizing fats.

Protein: Hormones, neurotransmitters (chemicals that make our nerves work), our immune system, and water balance all require protein.  Do you find that you have cold hands and feet? Do your legs swell, yet your doctor tells you that your heart is healthy? Do you want to exercise, but find it just wipes you out? Do you have menstrual cramps? Any of these may be symptoms that you are having difficulty digesting and utilizing protein.
