The ABG's of Indigestion- Acid Reflux, HeartBurn, and GERD Treatment

“I want to be able to sleep through the night."

“I wish I could eat my favorite foods again.”

“I just want to be able to enjoy my day more.”

These are some of the simple desires expressed by many of my patients who chronically suffer from heartburn or its annoying cousins, acid reflux and GERD.

If you have ever suffered from pain after eating, you know it is not fun. In fact it can take the pleasure out of any day.

If you have not found more permanent relief, it's because what you have tried is not getting to the cause of your heartburn pain. Because when you find and treat the cause, you can find your cure.

Digestive tract pain after eating (any discomfort from the mouth to the anus) can be caused by many things. But for many Americans it is probably one of the ABG’s of indigestion- Acid Reflux, Heartburn or GERD.

What’s the difference? The simple answer is not much.

Acid reflux is characterized, by those who have it, with a need to belch, difficulty swallowing, a sour, hot, acidic or salty taste in the back of the throat, a feeling of ‘food sticking’ in the middle of the chest or throat and a sour or nervous stomach. A frequent cause and effect is taking aspirin and acid reflux.

Heartburn is a common word used to describe the burning or pain in the esophagus/chest behind the breastbone. This usually happens after eating and may last for a few minutes to a few hours. Not everyone with heartburn has acid reflux and not everyone with acid reflux has heartburn.

GERD or Gastrointestinal Esophagus Reflux Disease is a fancier word favored by medical doctors used to describe a set of symptoms that can encompass acid reflux and heartburn.

If you suffer from any of these conditions, your day-to-day activities may suffer as well. You may find you need to restrict your food choices, you may become more irritable, or you may suffer from sleep disturbances resulting in less energy the next day. All of this can contribute to making it difficult to enjoy the day.

Short Term or Long Term Relief: Which is Better?

Perhaps you have tried OTC or prescriptive medications. Or self help remedies, like propping up your bed, sleeping in a chair, avoiding exercise and other stressful situations, or eating before 6 PM, since for many the worst episodes happen in late afternoon or evening.

If you have not found more permanent relief, it’s because what you have tried is not getting to the cause of your heartburn pain. Because when you find and treat the cause, you can find your cure.
